Nuclear Power - The Green Future?

Ghislaine Buffard | FR | 2022 | 94 minutes | D

The war in Ukraine has given new impetus to an old debate: How climate-friendly is nuclear power? Should it fill the gap left by the lack of fossil fuels from Russia, which cannot yet be replaced by renewable energies?

The question is, should existing nuclear power plants be operated for longer? This instead of gas power plants, which have a heavy impact on the climate. Nuclear power does indeed have relatively few CO2 emissions. But can it therefore be described as "green"? It is a risky technology. The waste remains radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years, and no safe final storage facility has yet been built. But the mining of uranium is also harmful to the environment - and this chemical element is also a finite resource. In addition, the construction of nuclear power plants is expensive.
