The Sky above Zenica
Nanna Frank Møller & Zlatko Pranjic
2024 | Bosnia/Den | 90 min
Original with English subtitles
In the Bosnian industrial city of Zenica, a huge steelworks is polluting the air. Cancer and childhood diabetes are rampant in the population.
A citizens' initiative is fighting to improve the situation. But the situation is complicated: politicians point to the jobs that are urgently needed. The EU is helping to finance a new power plant for the factory and at the same time subsidizing new cycle paths, which ironically allow Zenica to market itself as a "green city".
But people are not giving up and are undeterred in demanding healthy air. From the perspective of those affected, the film reveals the mechanisms that stand in the way of a sustainable future all over the world.
The filmmakers worked on "Sky Above Zenica" for seven years; they had to be just as persistent as their protagonists. In the film, however, it is not just their words, but also the images of the camerawoman Nanna Frank Møller, which show the lamentable situation as well as the unshakable struggle of the people in their own rhythm.
