Salmon Secrets

Jérémy Mathieu

2024 I CAN I 41 Min

English

French filmmaker Jérémy Mathieu moved to British Columbia (B.C.) five years ago. Although he knew little about the region, he was hooked. He quickly heard about the negative impacts the fish farming industry was having on wild salmon stocks and decided to investigate further.

Salmon farming is pushing wild salmon to the brink of extinction. The federal government has promised to remove fish farms from BC waters by 2025, but the industry is fighting back with false solutions. Join Clayoquot Action's Fish Farm Watchdog program as a team of underwater cameramen investigate an "experimental" fish farm near Tofino. What they discover surprises them and could spell disaster for wild salmon.

The film looks at the impacts of salmon farming through the eyes of those who want to protect wild salmon from extinction. Participants include members of the First Nations such as Skookum John (Keltsmaht First Nation), Joe Martin (Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation) and Kwakwabalas - Chief Ernest Alfred, traditional and elected leader of the 'Na̱mg̱is First Nation, as well as scientist and bestselling author Alexandra Morton.
