Living in the Time of Dying

Michael Shaw

2020 | USA | 52 min

English with German. Subtitles

Is humanity on the verge of wiping itself out? This question is a constant concern for Australian filmmaker Michael Shaw. In search of an answer, he sells his house and sets off on a trip around the world with his partner.

The result is a beautiful and life-affirming film. It is neither about technical solutions nor political approaches. The message is that humanity has lost its respect for nature. He compares us to the Greek tragedian Icarus, whose megalomaniac plans ultimately cost him his life.

Michael Shaw's protagonists have no recipe for reversing global warming. But they are convinced that it is possible to rebuild a constructive connection to the world. Or as Apache Stan Rushworth puts it in the film: "It is not man himself who has brought us to the current situation, but the hunter in man. But everyone knows in their hearts that we are much more than just that."
