What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his disciples be? Director Milo Rau (THE CONGO TRIBUNAL) stages a passion play in Matera that is characterized by injustice and inequality. Together with political activist Yvan Sagnet, who plays Jesus, Rau creates a biblical story. Yvan returns to the largest refugee camp near Matera and finds his "disciples" among desperate refugees. Together with small farmers, they establish the "Revolt of Dignity" and fight for migrant rights.
Milo Rau casts other roles with actors from Pasolini's and Mel Gibson's films. Enrique Irazoqui plays John the Baptist in his last role. Maia Morgenstern plays the mother of the Messiah, and Marcello Fonte takes on the role of Pontius Pilate. Thanks to Thomas Eirich-Schneider, impressive images are created, accompanied by the music and voice-over of Vinicio Capossela.
Milo Rau personally leads the evening with the question: Can art change the world?
