Station of the Butterflies

Martin Schlit

2023 | CH | 50 Min

German

Nature has slowly reclaimed the disused Baden marshalling yard in Basel and transformed it into a unique refuge for endangered species.

But now a large container transshipment point is to be built here, which would shift freight traffic from the road to the rail and the Rhine. This would destroy a wonderful biotope in a project that is intended to bring Switzerland and Europe closer to their climate goals.

The film shows the old marshalling yard as an example of the contradiction between continuing the usual way of life and protecting the last remnants of wild nature. A contradiction that for once does not arise in the high Alps, but in the middle of the city.
